Chapter 2. Oceanographic Conditions INTRODUCTION The City of San Diego collects a comprehensive suite of oceanographic data from offshore ocean waters surrounding both the Point Loma and South Bay Ocean Outfalls (PLOO and SBOO, respectively) to characterize conditions in the region and to identify possible impacts of wastewater discharge. The Ross Sea is one of the most productive regions of the Southern Ocean, partly owing to the large and persistent polynyas that form there. Kevin Arrigo, Assistant Professor of Geophysics at Stanford University, and colleagues examined the relationship between polynya formation and phytoplankton blooms in the southwestern Ross Sea.

An oceanographer studies the ocean. Several thousand marine scientists are busy at work in the United States dealing with a diversity of important issues — from climate change, declining fisheries, and eroding coastlines, to the development of new drugs from marine resources and the invention of new technologies to explore the sea. Other articles where Open-ocean polynya is discussed: polynya: Open-ocean polynyas, the larger and longer-lasting of the two types, form within the ice cover and are believed to be caused by the upwelling of deep warmer water. This type is best exemplified by the vast Weddell Polynya .

The wind-driven Terra Nova Bay (TNB) polynya, located in the western sector of the Ross Sea, plays a major role in shaping the sea ice and ocean dynamics of this region (Kurtz and Bromwich, , Bromwich, ).The polynya opening results principally from the synergy of meteorological, oceanographic, and physical geography features of this region (). represent ocean areas covered by various concentrations of sea ice. Pink and purple regions are almost completely covered by ice and light blue regions are ice-free. In summer the polynya disappeared with the melting of the ice cover. At its largest the polynya measured about by 1, kilometers. It had measurable effects.

Study of oceanographic conditions as related to Project Polynya / By Charles W Senior and United States. Hydrographic Office. Abstract. Mode of access: Internet Topics: Ocean circulation, Sea ice. Publisher: Washington, D.C.: U.S.

Polynya, also spelled polynia, a semipermanent area of open water in sea as are generally believed to be of two types. Coastal polynyas characteristically lie just beyond landfast ice, i.e., ice that is anchored to the coast and stays in place throughout the winter.

They are thought to be caused chiefly by persistent local offshore winds, such as the foehn, or katabatic (downward. Introduction [2] The Siberian continental shelf is known for active water mass transformation in winter due to the seasonal sea‐ice formation.

In the absence of sensible ocean heat input from below, the offshore components of winter surface wind, forcing over the Siberian coast, create persistent areas of open water off the land‐fast ice known as the Great Siberian Polynya [Bareiss and Cited by: The North Water Polynya is a recurrent polynya at the northern end of Baffin Bay.

As part of the International North Water Project, recording current meters were moored within this polynya during. Oceanography: Southern Ocean polynya. Article (PDF Available) a consequence of ocean heat carried to the sea surface by convection. This may have been a window to the past, as model analysis.

The main goal of the book is the presentation of results from studies of the time evolution of polar surfaces as observed by satellite sensors and their relevance to the study of cryospheric and.

Polynya signal transport is governed by two dynamical processes that act on different time scales and spread at different rates. Advection is the slower of these two mechanisms. In the deep ocean, polynya advective signals spread according to the large-scale abyssal circulation (e.g., Reid, ).

Polynya water advection. The study area of the TRANSDRIFT VI helicopter expedition is shown in Fig. In order to study oceanographic processes in the flaw polynya, oceanographic stations TI, 7/22, 18/19, 14, 02/06/23, and 24 were occupied directly at or close to the fast-ice edge (Fig.

8a). At stations TI/23, 7, and 8, hydrographic measurements were conducted. The Weddell Sea polynya refers to the immense sea ice–free area that occurred in the open-ocean region of the Weddell Sea in the winters of –76 (Carsey ).Because it opens a window between the atmosphere and deep ocean through intense deep convection, the Weddell Sea polynya is thought to have a substantial impact on the climate [see Morales Maqueda et al.

() for a review. To study the atmospheric response to a large polynya in the Southern Ocean, we use output from the high-resolution coupled climate system simulation described by Small et al. ().The Community Earth System Model, version 1 (CESM1), they employed is widely used for investigations of climate variability and change (e.g., Hurrell et al.

; Kay et al. The model is able to reproduce polynya events (i.e., opening date, closing date, and size) at various locations around the Arctic Ocean.

A mean ice production and corresponding salt flux from all Arctic polynyas of ±30 km 3 yr −1 and 6±×l0 12 kg yr −1, respectively, is found. Jung-Ho Hyun, Sung-Han Kim, Eun Jin Yang, Ayeon Choi, Sang Hoon Lee, Biomass, production, and control of heterotrophic bacterioplankton during a late phytoplankton bloom in the Amundsen Sea Polynya, Antarctica, Deep Sea Research Part II: Topical Studies in Oceanography, /,(), ().

The International North Water Polynya Study was conducted from throughwith emphasis into document physical and biological processes (Barber et al., b; Deming et al., Chen-Tung Arthur Chen, Alberto V.

Borges, Reconciling opposing views on carbon cycling in the coastal ocean: Continental shelves as sinks and near-shore ecosystems as sources of atmospheric CO2, Deep Sea Research Part II: Topical Studies in Oceanography, /, 56, 8. While coarser-resolution versions of CESM generally do not produce open-ocean polynyas in the Southern Ocean, they do emerge and disappear on interannual timescales in the synoptic-scale simulation.

This provides an ideal opportunity to study the polynya's impact on the overlying and surrounding atmosphere. Even if such scientific studies did exist, they might be of limited applicability to the North Water Polynya, where the water is unusually low in temperature, salinity and pH-partly as a result of.

Abstract A high-resolution sea ice–ocean numerical model of the North Water polynya has been developed to study the wind-driven circulation during polynya events.

An idealized three-layer stratifie. Employing results from a °, 40‐level fully global, coupled ocean–sea ice model, we investigated the role of physical processes emanating from atmosphere, ocean, and ice in the initiation, maintena.

Polynyas, areas of open water surrounded by sea ice, are sites of intense primary production and ecological hotspots in the Antarctic Ocean. This study determined the spatial variation in communities of pelagic ciliates in an Amundsen Sea polynya (ASP) and adjacent sea ice zones (SIZ) during austral summer from February to Marchand the results were compared with biotic and.

High-resolution SAR and AVHRR images are, e.g., used in the study by Massom et al. () for analysing the ice conditions around the Mertz Glacier Polynya. In Fig. 2, multi-sensor data acquired over the Terra Nova Bay are shown: A – Envisat ASAR, B – ALOS PALSAR, C – MODIS Band 1, and D – Envisat AATSR, covering an area of 22, km 2.

Further studies of the North Water can be found in the special issue on the International North Water (NOW) Polynya Study of Atmosphere‐Ocean (39, ) and Deep Sea Research II (49(22–23), ). Another theory for polynya generation related to the presence of the A German‐led study project on the NEW was carried out during three.

In order to study the polynya response to the wind forcing, the katabatic regime that dominates TNB was analysed. As shown before (Fig. 1), the greater percentage of the winds measured by the AWS Eneide comes from the W-WNW sectors and the winds that blow with speeds over 20 m s −1 come only from the western sector.

Meteorology is the study of the atmosphere, atmospheric phenomena, and atmospheric effects on our atmosphere is the gaseous layer of the physical environment that surrounds a planet. Earth’s atmosphere is roughly to kilometers ( miles) thick.

Gravity keeps the atmosphere from expanding much farther. Meteorology is a subdiscipline of the atmospheric sciences.
